Finished the first painting of a series of 30 large paintings. I had a blast listening to the new roots album undun while I was designing the background. The Nupastel drawing was sealed with the magic medium (polyurethane) and all the yellows in the painting disappeared so I had to come up with a solution for it. The polyurethane created an opportunity to a creative solution. So I carved out the figure with oil paints to make sure that the figures silhouette read well. Although now the figure looked like a cut out. So I had to get the background to interact with the figure some how. This is when the fun really happened. About five hours later it was done. Today was amazing and tomorrow I begin the first bike portrait of 30. Amazing times.

Finished this drawing yesterday and had to recount what drawing I was on. Bamm! 100, already. Woah! one month and a couple days later. I draw one before I go to sleep and one when I wake up. This project is giving a great deal of inspiration and a good beginning to the way I'd like to continue creating, learning, and experimenting. I would highly recommend studying one particular thing that you would love to learn about and capture with out taking too much time out of your other obligations through out the day. I mostly have fun with these drawings and continue to learn about capturing a persons personality and beauty in a drawing.

This Friday Show opening for The Distillation Show. I had the pleasure of painting one of the bottles that will in the show. The bottle is a portrait of a muse, Roben, who has inspired me to create a book. This book explores black and white drawing ,design, and capturing the essence of a person. Over 140 drawings in two separate sketch books. Currently the book is at 90 drawings now and still cranking. It should be released online around New Year's. But the Distillation show has my "Muse" bottle with 3 drawings and a mysterious portrait that can be purchased there:) We all need someone to inspire us to create.

Also Francis created an Amazing t-shirt for the show and an awesome bottle of his muse. Here is a preview of the shirt design.

Everyone should be some type of artist

The next best drawing I have done of a figure....ever. I will keep pushing the background to have more interaction with the figure. This is the first of thirty pieces I intend to create and make a second book along with the 30 portraits which are all a study of beauty. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder so I will show the beauty that I discover for myself in the images and writing that I create. I just finished watching http://www.presspauseplay.com/ and in the film they discuss that more and more people are becoming some type of artist because it is easier and cheaper thanks to the digital world and some think of it as a problem. The first reaction I had was how wonderful it would be if everyone had some creative outlet that they could share with the world because even if everyone was an artist the more important thing to think about is the persons perspective and how they view and create things. I have personally discovered that just beginning the search for beauty has led me to have a more intense experience of life and to appreciate things more. It sounds cheesy I know. But if your an artist you know that you view the world differently and more intense then if you had no creative outlet. That's my rant for tonight now to finish this piece. This is a 9 hour figure drawing in Nupastels the size is 26"by30" I consider it one of the best drawings I have created in Austin. A Long live figure drawing definitely pushes your limit on how much you can draw from the figure. I reached a point at 6 hours where I didn't know what else to do and learned very quickly that there are subtle color shifts of warm and cool that I played with during the last 3 hours. What is beauty and what is a muse?

Some interesting questions come up when your trying to find your path through this world. Other questions come from the interaction and influences of other people. The question that I enjoy thinking about is: what is beauty? "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" Well what does that mean? How is it that you can see beauty in things that you would normally dismiss? How can you show that beauty in which you see? Am I able to see beauty in all things? Can I create something even more beautiful then what I see? These are questions I aim to have an answer to and the answer may not be definitive but with that answer I can create artwork which test these thoughts. I am in the process of creating artwork that are the answers to these questions and more. I plan on putting together a beauty book with portraits and figures and plenty of answers to the question what is Beauty?

One of those answers maybe the first book that I create which will be available for free online once I get to 120 drawings. The book is an answer to "How do you understand the beauty of someone?" By focusing on one person, one model and drawing them in an effort to understand beauty. Beauty of line, shape, form, proportions, design, harmony, pattern, rhythm, and movement. I use this project to also explore drawing and design with no color, not yet at least. After the 120 drawings then I will create bigger pieces showing what I have learned from all these drawings. The sketchbooks will be put up for sale and so will the bigger pieces. I hope you enjoy the journey of watching this come to be. Thank you for stopping by.

This is Ashlie's first time posing as an art model and man did she do great! Every pose came with a mood and attitude, for example this was one of the longer poses where midway through we had to change the music to the black keys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5SHOX6eomk because it was very appropriate to her look. She is real sweet chill laid back person with plenty of mystery behind her eyes. The more that I figure draw different models and get to know them the more excited I am to capture their pose, mood, and personality in the pieces. She has the coolest looking hair to draw as well, it always has a great shape to it.

Halloween is coming up and this Saturday outside the studio will be a stage and easles that the students and I will be drawing some awesome models with their costume on. It is going to be an amazing weekend of drawing. Happy Halloween everyone!

Playful search for beauty

The image above is a shot of the beauty portraits that I have been working on for the past month or so. One of three projects of a series of images that will be turned into a comprehensive book of my understanding of beauty, sexy, and combining my favorite two subjects; chicks on bikes;) This started from a line of questioning that has started a long journey of learning. The very first question was why? Why do I make art? I answered that with; understanding, communicating, and inspiration. I like and enjoy understanding the world I live in through some form of expression and that expression becomes another form of communication with others of my understanding. This communication allows for inspiration and an interaction with others that I react to and notice if what I was trying to understand is being communicated well. Then I thought about what I would really love to understand and that would be beauty. The innate beauty in nature and of women are one of the most fascinating things that have been on my mind for so long. So I started with the portraits of women mostly because I am still extremely fascinated with portraits and getting better at understanding them. Having this focus on a series has allowed me to continue pushing composition, color, and design without getting too complicated with the image. The reoccurring idea that later came from creating the portraits was that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Like Bill Cunningham said "Those who look for beauty will find it" and I continue to test this idea out by going out and looking at something that I take for granted in nature like a tree. Then I begin to create beauty by that I mean creating visual pleasure by understanding the image that I am looking at and all its complexity through going down the list of principles and elements of design. Why? Because Merriam Webster Defines beauty as: the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. And the web definition is very similar but talks more about visual pleasure which is: A combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, esp. the sight. So the idea that beauty is in the eye of the beholder from my understanding is that if the viewer takes the beauty for granted then they will not see it as well as if they really pay attention to the shapes, color, value, soft and hard edges, overlapping, pattern, rhythm, movement, and balance. I would say that the older I get the more I like to see things with a new eye and pay attention to things with more beauty and fascination then before.

Such a beautiful day in Austin. Here are two pieces of Ashley. I have always done some great pieces from her and she is the first model that made me start drawing and painting after the session was over to take a normal figure drawing study into a finish piece. I remember I spent three mornings on her portrait having some of the most extreme changes with in the piece that I have ever tried. You would come in 20 minutes later and I would have put a new composition with different colors on the portrait. This allowed me to really turn towards learning by failing. This is about the 4th and 5th pieces of her where it took hours of really thinking about the mood of the piece and design. She makes a great look when she poses that it forces you to do better in order to capture the mood. I hope you enjoy and continue to learn from your failures.

During the figure session:

This drawing allowed me to slow down and pay attention to the figure and lighting situation more then the other ones that where a 1 hour drawing. This was approximately 2 hours of drawing time and 1 hour of reacting and designing the background while listening to the Black Keys to get that energy in the marks and quick decision making.

What I have been attempting to do when drawing the figure is increasing my level of focus by clearing my head with deeper breathing and decreasing the movement of my head and body (For the most part my eyes and arm were the only things moving during the session.) I love getting into what everyone recognizes as the "Zone" where time and space almost seem to disappear. I have grown to really enjoy the process of making artwork and one of those steps in the process is getting into the "Zone" where you forget about yourself and just focus on reacting and learning from the drawing process. What I have learned are various types of focus. In the beginning of a drawing I usually have tons of things running through my head and so to counter that I put on certain music such as Watch the Throne to get into an energetic focus. Then I begin to slow down and relax the marks and begin to react to the energetic under-structure that I build up and begin to refine and pay attention to the draftsmanship and design of the figure. Afterwards I will smudge all of it because it begins to look to meticulous and I continue to refine the image by smudging and redrawing until the drawing is in between expression and draftsmanship. In this drawing I came more towards the technical side which is what I shoot for in a live figure session and then the time afterwards I spend time to understand how to bring back that expressive energy by smudging some of the drawing.

After the figure session:

After the figure session I usually don't change the figure drawing much and focus on learning different background designs that go well with the figure. Previous thumbnail studies from other projects come flooding into my head and I begin to select the ones that stand out the most like dot patterns that remind me of stars, making the drawing have an ethereal look, also curved lines for rhythm and movement. In every drawing I attempt to do some design that I have not tried before. Usually this goes into a series of failures that I learn from. In this design some of the small things that I began to learn from are the small square light shapes on her that lead your eye to areas of interest. Although they didn't make sense when I first did made them later I tried to re-examine why they worked well and logically try to explain if it helps my eye go through various areas of the drawing or not. In this case the marks almost remind me of sun flares which goes with the theme of ethereal figure. Seeing that in this visual space all things have a soft and hard edge and lost edges I applied that to the small marks around her so the marks fit in the visual language that I created with in the image. This is Ashlie in a one hour pose from Thursday night. In this approach I attempted to leave the white of the paper showing and allow it to become a part of the composition. It has been a while since I grabbed some random color up and started to draw with it to see how I would begin to create an interesting color space that the image can live in. One trick I learned about color harmony is that if you take the colors of the foreground, image in this case the figure, and put them all in the background, then color harmony will be made and the colors don't look so out of place. For the background I also put in the color pink on top of the blue to create a pattern on the sheets and to mix the colors on top of one another. Just like mixing the blue in with the pink for lost edges. What I am learning to create after the figure is drawn and I begin to design the background of the figure is that I am undergoing a process of creating my own visual language with in the composition. Last nights figure drawing was about 1 hour of figure drawing and another hour figuring out the composition for it. I have been going in this interesting direction with drawings lately, I would describe them as this outer space ethereal look as well as designing the way that I draw the figure. Getting inspired by Mark Tennant I started loosing edges which honestly sometimes I loose the edges of areas that have not been fully resolved and that allows for the emphasis to be in the areas where I have focused most of the figure session in drawing. The soft and lost edges allows for the illusion of depth as well. Enjoy.

What an adventure this weekend it involved the police department doing some CSI, Austin record heat, the Emergency Room, and the coolest fashion show I have been apart of. I had a great time getting together with friends that came from Dallas, Treeport, and Chicago. I was educated in the art of wine tasting, by the way don't chew gum before you go and taste wine. Below are the drawings I did at Fashion-Easta in Austin. I had such a great time drawing these wonderful models in some well designed kimonos. Fitness

As a person who sits for the majority of the day I feel it necessary to give at least one hour a day to exercise. Whether it be walking, lifting, stretching, running, jumping, swimming, biking, or basically anything that allows your body to move and get you away from the desk. I used to make excuses why not to go out and run or lift weights. I would stick with exercising for a couple months and then stop for a couple for whatever reason. At certain times I felt fit enough, and would substitute that time with more work. I believe a constant maintenance of your body is necessary. Considering that you’re always using your body and forcing it to sit or stand all day. Your body needs that constant uptake from what you eat to how you treat it. When I sit for too long I can feel my body getting fidgety. When I need more energy for the day, coffee is my go to, but I recognize eventually down the line my body won’t react to it as well. If I want more energy, then cardio is a better answer. After all what caffeine helps in is getting more blood flowing to your brain.

Link to a good article on fixing bad habits. It's relevant to what I’m discussing in how to begin a habit like exercising through someone else's experience of getting it to stick.

The more I started a daily habit of getting out and either lifting weights, biking, or running, the more I noticed a big difference in a positive mood, and creativity. For example when I get frustrated with a painting or can’t seem to focus because I am thinking of something else, I go run and come back refreshed and more focused. Here in downtown Austin where the studio is at, there is a river a couple blocks down where I go run alongside of. It’s relaxing to run with so many plants and trees around the river. I’m fascinated by how much nature there is in such a close range of the city. In conclusion, cardio has allowed me to have more energy, taught me discipline when done daily, helps with stress, and looking better. Imagine not exercising and always working: maybe this seems like a good idea to get more work done. But if you’re physically incapable of doing more work after a couple years of constant work, then your purpose to work more is shut down. What I believe is If I am always going to be working, then I should get a few things scheduled into my day in order to work more efficient and feel better.

Word of caution; Always stretch and make sure to workout your quads in order to not get runners knee that I have right now. I still bike but it isn’t the same. That’s another story. Thank you for reading and critiques or questions are welcomed.

Magic Medium

The first one above took all day to draw because of all the squares, but in the end it was worth it. Drawing each square was therapeutic. The drawing hasn't been sealed yet. Golden soft gel medium is my go to when it came to sealing but there where accidents that happen during the application part that made me want to continue searching for something else. I had remembered that Mark English and George Pratt used boat varnish to seal and give a warming effect to their drawings and paintings. So I went off on my search for boat varnish which home depot employees helped me find. Looking through all the types of varnishes I found Minwax fast-drying polyurethane 32 fl oz for around $11, not bad. My only question was how long will this last me compared to the soft gel medium that has 8 fl oz for $11? So as you can see the second drawing I posted is 22"by30" and I poured two layers so far, I used about 1/8 of the can. If I would have used the soft gel medium it would have taken more then half the container. I say it is worth it and the affect it created with the drawing is amazing(It made it a little darker and richer also harmonized the color.) I will warn anyone one who thinks of doing this to make sure it's done outside because it smells really strong. In conclusion I think I found my magic medium.

Observing and Learning

Hello

Lately I have been practicing my writing skills to learn, and explore writing. So here is my first entry on why I continue to paint even after I finish the drawing. Critiques are welcomed.

During the drawing session with the model I focus every part of my being to see what is in front me and not take it for granted. Thinking about how this person must feel in that position and how that person looks in that same position and translating it down on paper. The best way to know what I mean is through this exercise: Take a look at your self in the mirror, while your doing this look at your eye and focus on it. Then with out moving your eye, focus on seeing yourself from the first person view point. So you should see yourself looking at a reflection of yourself. I usually took this for granted but when I really sat down and did this I realized that it is sometimes what I try to do when drawing the model (Maybe this is the great appeal with self portraits, understanding who you are). Then with the skills, experience, and understanding I translate it down to the paper with the medium that I know best, Nupastel for example.

The drawing method I practice; First I draw in a gesture of the figure or portrait Then I establish the proportions and certain landmarks that I use to refine the drawing later. After that I focus on portraying what the person looks and feels like, noticing small things like a minuscule smile combined with eyes that are squinting ever so slightly. Once the drawing is complete I begin modeling (light and form), beginning with light and dark shapes and ending with a sense of atmosphere around the figure done by playing with how hard or soft edges are. Having a limited amount of time with the model I pay attention to how long I spend on each step.

Thereafter the model leaves and the drawing is complete I continue to push what I have with composition, atmosphere, pattern, and color. During this time I also think about a what if scenario. What if another artist drew from the same angle and did the same drawing or better? How can I make this drawing more unique to the way I draw and paint pictures. I have been told before that finding your own voice (which can be referred to as style) will allow you to be different then everyone else. The way that I would describe this “voice” is that everyone has their own perception of reality and their own ideas of what it is like. You also have your own personal aesthetic for images. I love to play with abstract art because I start going down the list of principles and elements of art. Which you can have an infinite amount of ways to show and describe anything when you combine mix and match these rules, or when you break them.

The process after the drawing is done: First I seal the drawing with Golden Gel medium soft gel (which does mess up the drawing a little) Then I began to play with composition, Value, Shape, Balance, Pattern, color, and depth. In this particular piece below I had a problem with the color of her skin. In trying to make sure that she didn’t look like she hulk with green skin I eliminated all the red/pink color. To create a little bit of depth I put an abstract shape with a small amount of pattern in front of her. I kept all the darks and most of the contrast on her face as that was the point of interest. There are accidents that I kept like the small green square shape next to her and how the necklace disappears midway through. The figure drawing/painting underneath was done with the same process except I focused on creating a more interesting environment with square patterns. In putting these extra hours in a drawing I get to paint more, and learn more on pushing a life drawing to something more unique and personal. Thank you for reading.

What have I been up to?

Hello there and welcome back to my blog. I have quite a few drawings to share along with imagery from a number of great events somehow squeezed into the month of March. I also have a video to show you:)

These photos were taken by the amazing Phil Holland (click on his name to check out his wonderful work) during the CHROMA SXSW party that The Art Department hosted. As you can see Francis and myself were body painting during the event. I had such a great time! We weren't the only artists doing our thing - there were also several students drawing from 12-16 uniquely outfitted and color coordinated models. The event also brought together many other terrific multi-disciplinary artists that made this event like no other. The photos only show you the body painting room, so make sure to watch the video to see all the terrific energy.

The next night Francis and I received a 10pm phone call from Mr. Scott Richeson (TAD's director of operations). He was chilling with his buddy Chris, founder of MadGods street wear, who wanted some artwork to freshen up his shop. I said as long as I get to paint nude girls I'll do it. Two hours later we had an awesome wall to showcase. One more great thing about Austin ;)

Approximately a week later I participated in another great event: ART EROTICA. I created a live work of art that would be auctioned off with all the proceeds going to the the Paul Kirby Emergency Fund. The amount of people that showed up to support the cause was huge! I have to tell you though, I usually don't get overwhelmed when I draw in front of crowds (like at CHROMA), but the fact that the drawing was going to be auctioned off, five models, a short amount of time, and no warm-up drawing got my heart really racing! I loved it!!!

When I am drawing from a model I look to capture the subject's position, gesture, and feeling. As the piece evolves I make an effort to consider the design and composition, as well as really exaggerating the pose to make it my own. The piece above was a pretty standard academic drawing once the model ended her pose. The background and pattern weren't there and some lighting effects were not consistent. I spent an extra 20 minutes fixing subtle value shifts in the figure and thinking about the background. I thought of Barron Storey and his pattern of triangles that he draws everywhere. After putting them down I realized that a triangle was not enhancing the image and that I wanted to push it a bit more. So I drew tiny diamonds instead of other combinations of triangles, stripes, circles, swirls, or other abstract mark making. I was pleasantly surprised on how simple diamond shapes created depth in an otherwise regular figure drawing. That made me realize that not only does the time you spend with the model count, but also the time after the model has left. This is the time when your personal aesthetic shows up and your voice or style really shines.

These are drawings done with one side of the nupastel having more pressure then the other side and it creates a sharp and soft edge with one mark. This is one of my favorite techniques so far. It creates a sense of form with out much work.

Hello!

Here are some figure drawings that have different approaches to them with some mid-tone experimenting like the ones on top. I started with a Yellow to suggest the figure and then I would go over it with a dark blue and rubbed the two together to create a nice transition between the core shadow and the lights. In certain areas the yellow still shows through. I feel the top two were successful in my experimenting. I will be doing that same approach again to see how much more I can explore with it. I had a blast drawing these. Enjoy!

This is my second painting in this series. I was looking forward to creating a yellow painting but because the cadmium yellow that I have has such a limited value range and I wanted to create more of a contrast in values(Light figure on dark background) I used the violet to get a bigger range. This one took longer because the reference shot that was chosen did not have the ideal lighting on the figure. I will continue on working on this one after it dries, maybe do a yellow glaze over it with some wax. Hope you enjoy it.

I started off with Crescent watercolor Illustration board 30"by40". Dipped my brush in Gamsol mineral spirits and created the line drawing. In my experience if the drawing that I do first is not right then I will spend three times longer fixing it later on. Not to mention that I spend several hours noodling a bad drawing that is later erased off. Once I am happy with the simple but accurate drawing, I move on to filling in the local value and color of her skin. In this case I did a very saturated violet straight out of the tube (Permanent Magenta). (When I first started oil painting my professors told me to unsaturated my colors more, and after so many years of painting in neutrals I have been wanting to go back to super vibrant saturated colors. So with this painting I begin a new venture of growth as an artist.) Once I have the local value filled in I begin to put the lightest light on the figure to know my range of values on the figure from the darks to the lights. What I wanted to accomplish with the figure was to capture the fall out light.

What I learned about my process of painting is that I work the whole figure and build it up to a certain point, then I begin to work on one thing at a time to a certain level of finish. For example I started with the face, then to the hands, finishing up with the hair. A mistake I have made before is when beginning to render the face when the drawing and value structure haven't been established.

Above you see me figuring out the structure of the face and the direction of the brush strokes. I tried to keep the values between the mid tone and dark tones.

After the face I moved on to the hand. Getting the structure and highlights on it but keep the highlights darker then the highlights on the breast so that the hand contrast against something lighter.

I begin the hair rendering by making it a flat dark shape. Then the highlights are put in. Noticing that the highlights should be darker I just brush them off and Put more darks in the hair. I didn't like the hair until I put in the background and simplified the shape of the hair. The background was all done with a palette knife.

Here is a drawing I worked on last night on a biggie newsprint paper 24"by36" which is bigger then I normally work. I spent the majority of the time on the drawing last night. It feels so awesome to draw bigger. This morning I woke up early to finish the background. Francis Vallejo came up and I asked him what I should do with the background? That's when he handed me Dorland's wax medium which Mark English uses! So if your wondering how I did that strip on her face it was just wax put over nupastel. I finished up the piece with a big oil stick which are those white dotes around her. I will be doing more of these because I had so much fun with this one. Till tomorrow!

Hope your doing great! I am working on a couple of really cool projects that I have been wanting to do since I got to Austin. One is an Album cover and other promotional products for the best dj around here. Dj Dojo who is also teaching classes here at TAD studio. And the other is the second poster for Dr. Sketchy's which this months theme is comic books. I am going to have to research pin-up models for that one. (I know.The things that I have to put up with) I am also going to be going to ART Outside with TAD to represent! Art Outside is a 3-day Camping Festival on October 22-24 at apache pass. I also have plans for doing some landscape painting during my time there. Don't worry I'll take photos. One Last thing Kanye west's Album is going to be coming out in the middle of November. If you didn't know I am a huge Kanye fan. I have been working on a piece to send to him off and on since last month so as soon as it is done you should see it. Way more news to come stay tuned in.

What I have here is a series of boards that I will be creating and working on for a while. Lets call it a portfolio. The first one I did is the flamenco dancer. On the very top you see how I started with a pencil drawing, then I spray fixed the drawing so it would not smudge when I did the wash of color. The assignment is a family portrait. The idea is that they have just received the holy ghost (The birds as the symbol). The halo's represent becoming in a way enlightened. The medium used is holbeins acrylic gouche. It dries quick and allows for glazing for making color adjustments. The color was taken from A landscape that Mark English did in the past. I also use the tracing paper for the layout of the birds and for creating the faces thanks to watching the demo by Chris Payne I believe they came out ok. The approach in the clothing was taken from Sterling Hundley. Thanks Sterling. Finally the white teeth from Daniel Adel to bring in the focus by having the darkest dark next to the lightest light with the sharpest edge. One more thing I didn't know what to do with the bottom white but I thought it would bring interest into the composition, should I keep it or crop it?

I was waiting for my hair cut and drawing when everyone in the barber shop looked at me and asked what I was doing. Haha This happens when you stare at something for too long in public places. Well he liked it and wanted me to make a bigger version of it so here it is. Some interesting thing I learned from this piece is that if you want those water marks all over a pen and ink sketch lay down a layer of acrylic first. Although I can't promise the scan will look the same as the original.

Ok so this is a freelance work I am doing for the father of a friend/boss of mine. Here I developed a sketch from a photograph that he sent me, and I wanted to put a little extra in the portrait so I put the pattern of bats on the color. This gives the portrait pattern and a second read. If you have seen the film or read the book of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hunter S Thompson see's a couple of strange things such as bats. So after the sketch I went online to do further research and find more pictures. I just have to say Hunter other wise known for by his reporting manner called Gonzo vision was a very interesting guy. If you have time watch his interviews. The other paintings are color studies deciding on going with a cool overall tone or warm tone with him being an older man, which looks a lot more interesting in my opinion. What do you think? I am starting the final tomorrow night and will post the painting after it is completed.

Working through the struggle

These two pieces are for a hip-hop magazine called "The Find" here's a link All the illustrations in the magazine were done from a close group of friends oliver, francis, eric, tyler, and the one who designed the layouts and started the whole project Dustin darnault. I had a blast doing these illustrations, I also had a chance to start growing my music collection of "The Roots"

The top Illustration is about how the hip-hop community as a whole should go back to where it all started AFRICA. In reading the article I found a hip-hop artist known as k'naan that inspired my creativity. His music derives from Africa and what is and has been going on there such as kids with guns, poverty, the corrupt government and so on. If you have a chance check him out.

The second Illustration was about how great the roots are and yet they haven't hit the mainstream listeners even though they are your mc's favorite mc's. So I decided to show you who they are with portraits and what instruments they play. Oh and if you didn't know they are now the house band for jimmy fallon!!!!!!! I'm reading a couple books on the cultures in Africa and doing some research on-line. I have to say this is some really interesting stuff especially the theory that the HIV virus originated from a small group of chimpanzees with SIV back in the 1930's. So I did a portrait of DMX and while I was researching him I came across a video that was filmed as a back stage documentation. Some where in the video DMX or Earl Simmons began to pray at the table that him and his co-workers were sitting in. Then I found out that his next albums name is "walk with me now and you'll fly with me later" which sounds like the context of the album has some spiritual influence on him. Now DMX has been arrested so many times in his life that it does become a surprise when you see him holding hands with others and praying for his dinner. My idea is "DMX finds religion" and the bars indicate where he has found religion. The styles vary a little but the two on the right are finals while the two on the left are studies. Hope you like them.

Dia De Muertos

My interest in doing this project was to learn more about my Mexican culture and the traditions that are done during the Day of The Dead. The Day of the Dead is a celebration in November of loved ones who have passed away and their journey to the after life. Mexicans believe that death is not the end, but the beginning of a new stage of life. All Saints Day (the first day of November) is the day that the people pray for the young children that have passed away. All Souls Day (the second day of November) is for everyone else that has passed away. The celebration consists of taking the recently deceased from the streets of the town to the cemetery, taking offerings to the grave. Some of the offerings during this event are the “cempasuchil” (an orange flower), toys for children, bottles of tequila, mescal, and pulque. There may also be an offering of candies such as sugar skulls. These offerings are for welcoming the deceased. Although the living eat the physical food, it is said that the dead eat the essence of the food. Another activity is dancing in colorful costumes with skull shaped and devil masks in the plaza or garden of the town. These traditions vary from town to town.
In the first piece I decided to portray the time in which the people from the town take the recently dead to the grave. Claude Monet inspired the color palette on this piece with his paintings of water lilies. The second piece is depicting All Saints’ Day. The third painting is about the dead souls that walk through the streets towards the cemetery, eating the essence of the food that is set out for them.
I now have a deeper appreciation for my culture and its traditions. In doing this project I have learned to develop my own voice in my work. I have also created a new process of working to get coherent messages through my images in oil paint.

These are the first five portraits of my family members. I will be doing approximately 30 of them with in the next 3 weeks in order to put them up with my thesis, because the idea of the day of the dead is to join together with the family and remember the ones that have passed away. These two paintings depict the goddess of the dead, Santa Muerte, prayed for health and fertility. The dead are shown walking the streets, returning to their cemetery from the afterlife in order to reunite with awaiting family members. Once the dead have arrived, they are presented with a traditional meal prepared by the family members. The spirits of the dead devour the essence of their meal, leaving the physical portion in this realm.

This is one of four oil paintings depicting scenes from the Day of Dead festival in Mexico. This piece is almost complete. What's missing are designs that will be surrounding the person coming out from the coffin and a couple more people coming out of the other coffins.

I did some research on the "Lady of The Dead" and found several other names that they called her. The name that I found that was better to work with was "Santa Muerte" which translates into English as "Saint Death" What I found most interesting was what she stood for which is "no matter how beautiful you are everyone dies and ends up looking the same." This doll was decorated for my senior thesis Which is about the day of the dead. The doll came out being very creepy, but its still pretty cool.
